TASC FIRE APPARATUS
1946-1985 Photo Archive, Scott Mattson, 2002
Trautwein And Sons Company.
TASC’s interesting use of sheet metal and graceful lines combine to produce some of the most stylish fire apparatus rigs. Now take a photographic look at this small, New Jersey manufacturer of classic fire apparatus. Photos depict the variety of chassis that were utilized by this builder. They show a progression from the mid-1940s through 1985 and from small commercial chassis to the final few custom units.
Today, many of the earlier units exist as parade pieces while some of the later rigs remain in service with various fire companies. Every fire apparatus buff will enjoy looking at these elegant rigs.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Scott Mattson grew up in the borough of Point Pleasant New Jersey. His childhood exposure to home town fire apparatus and one stylish rig in particular built by TASC, led to a lifelong interest in fire apparatus history. By his teenage years Scott combined his passion for photography with his interest in fire apparatus. He quickly became an accomplished freelance fire photographer in his spare time. Working alongside two long-time fire buffs and photographers, William Schwartz and the late James Burner, Scott further honed his apparatus photography skills.
He has had photographs published in several fire service journals and books. Most recently, he contributed to Jersey Shore Fire Apparatus — Classics Through the ‘60s (available through this website) by performing much of the photo editing for that successful book. Scott still resides at the Jersey Shore and continues to photograph apparatus with precision and attention to detail. His area of special interest is the history and photographic record of apparatus built in New Jersey.
Scott is a member of the Society for the Preservation and Appreciation of Antique Motor Fire Apparatus in America and the American Truck Historical Society.
