World Encyclopedia of Fire Engines & Firefighting, Neil Wallington, 2005

This coffee-table book is actually two books in one.

The first section charts the history of firefighting and the development of the fire engine from bucket chains and manual pumps designed to be pushed or pulled to the scene of a fire by hand. Horse power, steam power, electric batteries and the coming of the motor age saw impressive changes in the design and engineering of fire trucks. With vast social change in the twentieth century, increasingly sophisticated technology in the home, and ever more dangerous chemicals in use in industry, the role of the fire service has broadened to encompass a wide range of emergency and rescue work.

The second section of the book is subtitled "The A-Z of Fire Engines". This is the definitive encyclopedia of 165 of the world's major manufacturers, bodybuilders, chassis manufacturers and special appliance makers, both existing and defunct. Many early pioneers of firefighting equipment are included. Each manufacturer's history, innovations and specialist equipment are listed, accompanied by a unique collection of photographs of historical and contemporary fire apparatus. Technical specifications of the engines describe the key elements of their design, performance and innovations.
