Juvenile Fire Setters vol. 2 - In Their Own Words 4 Years After, Idea Bank, 2002
The award-winning DVD, In their own words, told the personal stories of three teenagers. It was a compelling portrait of the consequences of juvenile firesetting. Since its introduction in 1998, more than 6,500 fire departments and schools have added the DVD to their libraries. It remains an ideal tool to use for one-on-one interventions as well as in a classroom setting.
Now, Four Years After revisits Amy, Jason and Domingo... revealing the directions their lives have taken since the first video was released. Once again, the heart of the program lies in the power of their honesty as they tell their stories in their own words.
Amy said in the first DVD: "Moving in with my father was really hard. I didn't know who he was, and I was just supposed to go in and be his daughter... but I didn't know how to."
Now, Four Years After: "We argued a lot that first year, but we had some fun times, too. Then, my father's girlfriend moved in with us. Everything changed when that happened. I always said I wanted him to stop yelling and just listen, but the tables were turning and I was the one pushing him away."
In the first DVD Jason said: "My name is Jason. I'm fourteen years old and just served two months for arson. I'm a convicted felon now and I'm going to have to live with it."
Four Years After: "I got an application yesterday to rent an apartment. The felony question was there again. I hope that ends soon, but I don't think it's going to."
Finally we hear Domingo's initial thoughts: "My name is Domingo. I'm seventeen and I'm a senior in high school. When I was eight, I found an M-100 in my brother's room...I was still trying to put out the fuse when it exploded."
Four Years After, he says: "Wearing short sleeve shirts made me uncomfortable for a long time. I'm probably still getting over it, you know what I mean? People pre-judge you... They just look and point and stare."
Four Years After is designed to encourage classroom interaction and discussion about juvenile firesetting. To assist the instructor, a teaching guide and lesson plan come with each program.
