PRINCIPLES OF VEHICLE EXTRICATION, 2nd ed., IFSTA, 2000

This 2nd edition of Principles of Vehicle Extrication replaces the 1st edition of the book entitled Vehicle Extrication.
It is designed to provide rescue personnel with an understanding of the current challenges, techniques, and equipment available for the safe and effective extrication of victims trapped in land-based vehicles of all types. However, this manual only provides information - it does not provide training. In addition, the information in this manual deals only with the mechanics of freeing victims from entrapment in vehicles and related machinery. It does not include emergency medical information regarding the proper packaging of victims for extrication.
The tools and techniques described in this manual represent the current state of the art as practiced by rescuers throughout North America, but they are not the only ways that extrication can be performed safely and efficiently. Since no single tool nor any single technique will be safe and effective in every situation, the reader is encouraged to master a variety of extrication tools and techniques.
This manual addresses Section 4-4.1 of NFPA 1001 (1997), Sections 3-1, 3-2, 3-3, 3-4, 3-5, all of Chapter 6 of NFPA 1006 (2000), and Chapters 2 and 6 of NFPA 1670 (1999), all published by the National Fire Protection Association.
The text begins with an introduction to vehicle extrication, scene management, and incident command. It continues with a review of extrication-related equipment and techniques. Extrication of victims trapped in passenger vehicles, buses, medium and heavy trucks, trains, and industrial and agricultural vehicles are also discussed. Finally, special situations and topics in vehicle extrication are discussed.
