STRUCTURE PROTECTION IN THE I-ZONE, George Bradford, 2001
The interface environment is everywhere - in the uncut grasses growing along our highways; in the undeveloped lots beside our shopping centers; in the woodlands that reach up to our backyards.
For municipal departments, the true meaning of suburban sprawl lies in the many challenges posed by the I-zone, and the skills required to mitigate incidents there are no longer solely the domain of the hot shot crews who battle wildfires.
From mobile tactics to situational awareness to reading topographic maps to forecasting the weather, veteran firefighter George Bradford will show you how to sharpen those vital skills that you don't get to use every day. His practical methodology, founded on mastery of the details, will help you forge a cooperative effort out of disparate elements. He will help you see what the fire is doing, what roads are viable, what bridges are safe, what structures to defend, when to retreat, how to find your way out again.
Unique among firefighting texts, Structure Protection in the I-Zone is an indispensable guide for departments that need to mount operations quickly in unfamiliar terrain, against an enemy that can find its legs at a change in the wind.
MAJOR POINTS: Understand interface issues from the perspective of a local fire department; Experience these operations as a member of a team; Learn proper radio techniques and procedures; Get an understanding of the scientific approach to I-zone firefighting.
