Campus Insecurity DVD, A & E, 1998/1999

Crime on college campuses has long been regarded as an aberration--with the close attention of local authorities and campus police, our nation's schools are generally thought of as safe havens for students. But in fact, this is not always the case.

Far more troubling is mounting evidence that security lapses are going unreported and even being covered up by officials.

CAMPUS INSECURITY issues a failing report card on school safety, documenting cases from MIT to Minnesota, where repeated allegations against athletes were disregarded and denied by top officials. We'll hear from Howard and Connie Clery, whose daughter was brutally raped, beaten and murdered in her dormitory at Lehigh University. Their investigation eventually found signs of a nationwide cover-up of campus crime, prompting them to start an organization called "Security on Campus" to fight for new laws requiring universities to release crime data.

Until colleges face up to the problem and police themselves, the true scope of campus crime may never be known.
