FDNY Tales - About the Editor - Ira Hoffman

My association with FDNY began in the 1961 as an auxiliary fireman at Engine 318 in Coney Island.

Through the years I have maintained a close association with FDNY - I have been a member of the New York Fire Bell Club for over 40 years.

Starting in 1964, and continuing for 26 years, until 1989, I produced the yearly Runs & Workers list. For the full story about this, please CLICK HERE

After my discharge from the US Army in 1969, I resumed my service as an Auxiliary Fireman. As the Auxiliary Captain of Engine 232 (quartered with E. 231, L. 120 and the 44th Battalion prior to moving into the "Tin House") I photographed the significant fire activity in the 44th Battalion. My photo of the Chester Street fire was used as the cover photo for the 4th issue / 1970 of WNYF. To see this photo CLICK HERE

In 1987 I started a business aimed at providing books (and later videos and software) for the fire service - FSP Books & Videos (aka Fire Service Publications).

I was appointed an FDNY Honorary Deputy Chief in 1985, and promoted to Honorary Assistant Chief in 1999.

I remain actively involved in the fire service in Massachusetts. I am photographer for one department, photographer and Public Information Officer for another.
