FDNY Tales - The FDNY Assignment Card

FDNY Tales - The Earliest Assignment Cards

Shown is an assignment card in what was to be the familiar form for 60 years - card stock, 10" x 4".

This is one of a series issued on July 1, 1909.

Manhattan Box 220 was located at Wooster and Spring Streets. The borough (Manhattan) does not appear on the card, this would change in later years.

What was to become "ladder companies" were referred to then as "H & L Co's" - hook and ladder companies.

"BT" referred to the boat tender (that would resond if a fireboat was assigned to the box)

"WT" referred to water tower, and Water Tower #1 responded on the 1st alarm.

The 2nd, 3rd and 4th alarms brought fuel wagons from Fuel Depot 5.

Six engines responded on the 3rd, 4th and 5th alarms.

2 battalion chiefs responded on the 1st alarm, an additional battalion chief responded on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th alarms. This would change in later years.

Note that of the 27 engine companies that would respond on the 5 alarms, only 5 were covered. This might indicate that most of the companies were "double" companies.
