FDNY Tales - Ghost Story

FDNY Tales - Ghost Story (Waren Fuchs)

I was appointed as a Fire Alarm Dispatcher on September 15, 1967.

On my first day at the Brooklyn Central Office (C.O.) I was told the story about the ghost.

The fire department took possession of the building that would become the Brooklyn C.O. in 1923. It had formerly been used by the Park Department.

On November 1, 1918 there was an horrific train crash below the building on tracks used for a shuttle service that ran from the Prospect Park station to the Fulton Street station. 97 died, hundreds were injured. The disaster became known as the "Malbone Street Wreck". Malbone Street itself was a casualty. The road was so associated with disaster, its name was changed to Empire Boulevard.

The building was used as a makeshift morgue for many bodies. Accoridng to some people, then and now, ghosts of the dead appear in the basement.

I spent 37 years looking, but never had an encounter. If only the walls could talk. (Warren Fuchs)
