FDNY Tales - Like Father, Like Son

FDNY Tales - Like Father, Like Son

It happens quite often that a firefighter has a relative on the job. Sometimes it's a father and son.

But what about a father and son holding the same rank?

... and the rank is Battalion Chief

... and they are in the same battalion

... and they are working the same day!

Well, it happened recently (August 9, 2012). Frank Ritchie, is the Battalion Commander of the 13th Battalion. His son, Chris Ritchie, former Captain of Engine 21, was promoted to battalion chief about two months ago and on August 9, 2012 worked in the same battalion. Chief Frank Ritchie worked the 9x6 tour and Chief Chris Ritchie worked the 6x9 tour.

As far as we know this is the first time that a father and son both held the rank of battalion chief, and on the job at the same time.

The fact that they worked in the same unit, and on the same day, may not happen too many more times as the elder Chief Ritchie is due to retire in the near future.

Now it's your turn. Do you have a similar, or better story that you'd like to submit? Maybe you have an idea for story? Please let us know. Send it to: fdnytales@Fire-Police-EMS.com
