EMT SELF DEFENSE AND THE AGGRESSIVE PATIENT, S. Wilder & Associates, 1993
Injury at the hands of aggressive patients is becoming a concern to pre-hospital providers from coast to coast.
This unique video boldly addresses the issue of aggression management, and helps EMT's recognize potentially aggressive behavior before it reaches the point of violence. Produced in response to the growing number of EMT's and paramedics finding themselves becoming the victim at the hands of combative patients, the video combines techniques of talkdown and de-escalation with basic hand to hand self defense tactics.
The video is written by Deputy Chief Steve Wilder, an Illinois licensed paramedic and a pioneer in fire service risk management, and Chris Sorensen, an EMT and a licensed police self defense instructor.
It introduces an aggression continuum that trains the viewer to recognize escalating behaviors and restore a state of calm without allowing violence to prevail. In addition, basic defensive tactics that the EMT may consider in defending him or herself are introduced as well. This video also provides simple steps the EMT can use to lessen their vulnerabilities when attack seems imminent, and ways to minimize their risk of injury.
