NFPA 1950 offers administrative guidance and requirements on emergency medical protective clothing, rescue and multifunctional protective ensembles, wildland and urban interface firefighting protective clothing, product certification, and more.
This inaugural edition of NFPA 1950 consolidates three previous standards—NFPA 1951, Standard on Protective Ensembles for Technical Rescue Incidents; NFPA 1977, Standard on Protective Clothing and Equipment for Wildland Fire Fighting and Urban Interface Fire Fighting; and NFPA 1999, Standard on Protective Clothing and Ensembles for Emergency Medical Operations.
The 2025 edition features several updates, including:
- New provisions for nonvisual/machine readable tags
- Added requirements for optional high-visibility garments and new requirements for electrical and flash fire protection
- New testing for helmet stability and revised sizing requirements for garments
- Added requirements for evaporative resistance (i.e., breathability) to improve cooling in warm environments and requirements for optional protection from opioid drugs
- A new annex on selection, care, and maintenance of protective clothing for emergency medical operations to provide guidance to organizations
- New performance criteria and test methods throughout, including several improvements to clarity and consistency with other protective clothing and equipment product standards
