It is vital that emergency service organizations offer adequate respiratory protection for their personnel. NFPA® 1987, Standard on Combination Unit Respirator Systems for Tactical and Technical Operations, answers the need for a document addressing the design, use, testing, and certification of CURs not covered by any existing provisions.
This first-time standard applies to self-contained breathing apparatus used in tactical operations, including:
- Rescue response missions
- Emergencies involving hazardous materials
- Terrorist incident response
- Similar types of operations where products of combustion, oxygen deficiency, particulates, and toxic products
- Other immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH) atmospheres
NFPA 1987 specifies the minimum requirements for the certification, labeling, design, performance, and testing of new CURs, replacement parts, components, and accessories. NFPA 1987 helps ensure these respirators are designed to provide proper fit and they function as intended. The standard also helps to ensure that CURs are properly tested for chemical permeation and penetration as well as the environmental and human performance.
