FDNY Inventions

FDNY members have been responsible for quite a few inventions. Among them:

  • The Halligan tool, invented by Deputy Chief Hugh A. Halligan (WNYF 1947 / 3rd issue, and other issues)
  • The Loftus Suction Collector, invented by Chief of Department Peter Loftus (WNYF 1951 / 2nd issue)
  • The Bouke eyeshield, invented by Les Bourke, Engine 231 (WNYF 1972 / 1st issue)
  • high pressure guage safety device, invented by Jimmy Schalk (WNYF 1950 / 2nd issue)
  • Hayes aerial ladder, invented by former fireman Daniel D. Hayes (WNYF 1968 / 4th issue)
  • the Dengler Dolly, push cart for charging batteries, invented by Lt. Tom Dengler, Engine 159 (WNYF 1966 / 1st issue)
  • underwater telephone, invented by Joe Orefice, Records Room (WNYF 1965 / 4th issue)
  • early fire helmet, invented by Jacobus Turck (WNYF 1972 / 1st issue)
  • electric hydrant pump, invented by Syl Serani, Engine 313 / Ladder 164 (WNYF 1975 / 2nd issue)
  • the Kelly Kart, invented by Lt. Tim Kelly, SOC (WNYF 1997 / 4th issue)
  • the "rat wrench", invented by Firefighter Spears, Engine 50 (WNYF 2000 / 4th issue)
  • the "Lorenzo Ladder', invented by Lt. Peter Lorenzo, Engine 23
