FDNY Tales - The Bus

FDNY Tales - The Bus

Prior to 1972, Engine 248 was located on Church Avenue, between Flatbush and Bedford Avenues.

One night, in the dead of winter, on the midnight to 3AM watch, box 3963 at Church and Bedford Avenues came in to the Brooklyn Communications Office on Empire Boulevard.

Knowing how close the box was to E 248's quarters, the dispatcher phoned and asked the housewatchman to look out towards the box and see if anyone was there. No one was apparent at the location so the dispatcher transmitted the box.

Engine 248 and Battalion 41 were there in a flash to find a small woman leaning against the alarm box.

When the chief asked if she had pulled the box, the woman admitted she had. When asked why, the woman said she had been waiting too long for the Bedford Avenue bus to come along.

Instead of a bus ride, she was given one in a NYPD patrol car.
